Migrating from GeoDirectory to Smart Directory Pro follows a 4-step process: export GeoDirectory listings to CSV, check the columns, import through SDP’s CSV importer with AI column mapping, and set up 301 redirects to protect your rankings. Stay on GeoDirectory if its location addons already serve you well; move to Smart Directory Pro if you want AI semantic search, a built-in email-verified claim flow and programmatic “best X in Y” pages in one theme and plugin.
When to migrate from GeoDirectory
Three triggers tend to push GeoDirectory operators to migrate:
- Renewal arrives and you want fewer moving parts. GeoDirectory’s all-addons membership is $229 per year, with addons also sold one by one. Smart Directory Pro ships theme and plugin together at $99 to $399 per year.
- AI features become a priority. SDP runs AI semantic search on every tier, plus an AI SEO audit and 5 AI content tools from Pro. GeoDirectory’s pricing page does not list AI features.
- Programmatic SEO becomes the strategy. When traffic plateaus, Local Roundups generate ranked “best X in Y” pages from your listings on the Pro tier.
If none of those triggers apply and GeoDirectory’s location addons are working for you, staying put is the right call. The feature comparison is on our Smart Directory Pro vs GeoDirectory comparison page; the cost analysis is in our GeoDirectory pricing review.
Before you start: 5 prep tasks
- Take a full database backup. UpdraftPlus, All-in-One WP Migration, or a hosting-level snapshot. A clean backup makes the migration reversible.
- Audit your current GeoDirectory custom fields. Standard fields (name, address, phone, email, website, hours, categories) map cleanly. Note any custom fields you want to keep.
- Note your current taxonomy structure. Screenshot your categories, locations and tags so you can recreate the structure in Smart Directory Pro.
- Document your URL structure. Visit a sample listing and note the slug pattern so you can plan redirects.
- Buy Smart Directory Pro. Pro at $199 per year covers 5 sites and adds the AI SEO audit, AI content tools, Local Roundups and Elementor widgets. Choose Agency if you run more than 5 sites or need white label.
Step 1: Export GeoDirectory listings to CSV
Use GeoDirectory’s Import & Export screen and export your listings as CSV. A typical export includes:
- Listing core data (title, content, status)
- Standard fields (address, city, region, country, phone, email, website)
- Categories and tags
- Geographic coordinates (latitude, longitude)
- Custom fields added in GeoDirectory
Save the CSV with a clear filename like gd-export-2026-09-28.csv. Large directories take longer to export, so run it at a quiet time.
Step 2: Map fields between GeoDirectory and Smart Directory Pro
GeoDirectory and Smart Directory Pro use different column names for the same data. The SDP importer maps columns for you with AI, and this table shows where the common fields land:
The importer shows its suggested mapping before the import runs. Adjust anything that did not match, and leave out columns you no longer need.
Step 3: Import via the SDP CSV importer
In WordPress go to Directory → Tools → Import / Export and upload the CSV. The importer walks through:
- Preview and mapping. SDP reads the headers and sample rows, then AI suggests which listing field each column belongs to. Confirm or adjust.
- Duplicate handling. Choose to skip duplicates or update existing listings, so a rerun does not double your data.
- Default status. Import as published, pending or draft; draft is safest for a first pass.
- Optional AI enrichment. Turn on description enrichment or FAQ generation if you want thin listings improved during import (uses your AI provider key).
- Run import. Listings import in batches with a progress bar.
If you have reviews, export them to a separate CSV with one row per review and import it the same way. SDP detects a reviews file and attaches each review to its listing.
On the Pro tier you can then run AI Categorisation to tidy category assignments across the imported listings.
Step 4: Set up URL redirects to preserve SEO equity
This is the most important step in the migration. Skip it and your old listing URLs return 404 errors, which costs rankings.
Note your current GeoDirectory listing URL pattern from the prep step. Smart Directory Pro listings live at /listing/{listing-slug}/, so each old URL needs a 301 redirect to its new equivalent.
- Use the Redirection plugin. Install Redirection (free on WordPress.org), then import a CSV of old URL to new URL pairs built from your GeoDirectory export.
- Or add a pattern rule. If the slugs stayed the same, one regex redirect from the old base path to /listing/ covers every listing.
- Or .htaccess rules. On Apache hosts a rewrite rule in .htaccess handles the same pattern at server level.
After redirects are live, test 10 random old URLs to confirm each returns HTTP 301 to the right page. Then submit the new sitemap to Google Search Console.
What you lose vs what you gain
- AI semantic search on every tier, plus an AI SEO audit and 5 AI content tools from Pro
- Email-verified claim listing flow on every tier
- Local Roundups (programmatic “best X in Y” pages) from the Pro tier
- Elementor widgets included from Pro
- Theme and plugin delivered together
- Annual licence ($99 to $399 per year) with a 14-day refund
- GeoDirectory’s Location Manager structure is modelled with SDP locations and categories instead
- GeoDirectory-specific tutorials and community knowledge do not carry over
- Paid third-party GeoDirectory addons do not transfer
- One-time migration work to plan and test
- A possible short-term traffic wobble while Google processes the redirects
Common migration pitfalls and how to avoid them
- Pitfall 1: Migrating without a backup. Always take a full database and uploads backup first. The migration is only reversible if you can restore.
- Pitfall 2: Skipping URL redirects. Old URLs break and rankings drop. Treat redirects as mandatory.
- Pitfall 3: Re-importing duplicates. Turn on duplicate skipping in the importer before a rerun.
- Pitfall 4: Leaving GeoDirectory active alongside Smart Directory Pro. Two directory plugins can clash on post types, URLs and menus. Deactivate GeoDirectory (don’t uninstall yet) once SDP is verified.
- Pitfall 5: Forgetting custom fields. Check the importer mapping for every custom column you want to keep.
- Pitfall 6: Migrating live without staging. For larger directories, migrate on a staging copy first, verify, then repeat on production.
Timeline + total migration cost
For large directories or complex custom field structures, our Custom Directory service can handle the migration end to end. Pricing is quoted per project.
After migration: 5 things to verify
- Listing count matches. Compare the count under Directory → All Listings with your GeoDirectory export.
- Category structure matches. Spot-check 10 random listings to confirm categories.
- Map coordinates work. Open a listing with a map and confirm the pin sits in the right place.
- Sample URL redirects work. Test 10 old URLs and confirm a 301 to the new URL.
- Search returns expected results. Try 3 of your most common search terms and confirm sensible results.
Once these 5 checks pass, deactivate (don’t uninstall) GeoDirectory. Watch Google Search Console for 404 spikes for a few weeks, then uninstall GeoDirectory.
What if my GeoDirectory setup is custom / complex?
For directories with paid third-party GeoDirectory addons, deep custom fields or unusual URL patterns, the standard path may not cover everything. Two options:
- Hybrid migration: move core listings and categories via CSV, then rebuild the custom pieces with SDP’s developer hooks.
- Managed migration: the Custom Directory service covers complex migrations end to end, including field mapping and post-migration checks.
See it in action
These short clips show the import and review steps from this guide inside Smart Directory Pro.
Before you start, you can see Smart Directory Pro running on a live directory.
How long does it take to migrate from GeoDirectory to Smart Directory Pro?
It depends on listing count and custom fields. A small directory can move in an afternoon; larger or heavily customised directories need a staging run first.
Will I lose SEO traffic during the migration?
Correct 301 redirects are the biggest factor in keeping your rankings. A short wobble while Google processes the change is common.
Do reviews migrate from GeoDirectory?
Yes, as a separate CSV with one row per review. SDP detects a reviews file and attaches each review to its listing.
Can I run Smart Directory Pro alongside GeoDirectory during the migration?
Keep them apart. Install SDP, run the import, verify, then deactivate GeoDirectory and uninstall it once you are confident.
Will my custom GeoDirectory addons transfer?
Standard data transfers via CSV. Paid third-party GeoDirectory addons do not port over; rebuild those features with SDP’s developer hooks or the Custom Directory service.
What if I use GeoDirectory’s Location Manager addon?
Smart Directory Pro models geography with its Locations taxonomy and Local Roundups pages. Check whether that covers your structure before you migrate.
How much does the migration cost?
One Smart Directory Pro annual licence ($99, $199 or $399 per year). Complex migrations through the Custom Directory service are quoted per project.
What happens to my listing URLs after migration?
SDP listings live at /listing/{slug}/. Set up 301 redirects from your old URLs so links and rankings follow.
Can I undo the migration if something goes wrong?
Yes if you took a database and uploads backup first. The 14-day Smart Directory Pro refund window also applies.
Does Smart Directory Pro support the same fields I had in GeoDirectory?
Standard fields (name, address, phone, email, website, hours, coordinates, categories, tags) map directly. The importer’s AI mapping handles most other columns; confirm them in the preview.
